Wintry Whimsy

All of this luscious snowfall has me feeling equal parts nostalgic and hopeful for the future. On one hand, I have the sweetest memories of wandering around New York City with Josh on a very snowy day that brought the metropolis to a halt. And on the other, as I see my six-week-old get her first glimpses of powder falling down from behind the safety and warmth of a window, I can’t wait to see her make snow angels one day, and feel the whoosh of glee as she scoots down a big hill on a sled (MANY winters from now, when I get over my own fears and let her).

This little lady tends to look out the window when I’m snapping pics, especially if snow is falling. It’s such a treat to watch her start to discover the world around her.

In the spirit of winter and with an emphasis on bridal as that is our main passion here at this old blog, let’s talk about some ways to make the most of this gorgeous powder if you’re lucky enough for it to fall on your big day. We’ve all seen the stunning Pinterest images of first looks and late-night smooches against a backdrop of falling snow. Is there anything prettier? Make sure you’re ready to face the falling flakes with frizz-resistant hair products (I adore using mousse in the winter — just a spot’ll do ya), a luxe fur to cuddle up in for pictures, and maybe even a hot cocoa bar to warm guests up from the inside out. Also, consider making the interior decor match what’s going on outside with white, shiny details, pops of silver, and maybe even some wintry greenery here and there. Here’s some inspo:

Willow Lets Mommy Sleep… & Some Winter Wedding Inspo

day19

Yesterday started out rough, but ended in white tees and plenty of deliciousness.

Many of you cheered me on through my first official day home alone with Willow yesterday. As a brief update, I did eventually take a shower, but my hair never got blown out. I managed to slap together a fresh arugula salad and some impromptu garlic toast to go with the homemade chicken soup my mom had made and stored for us. As soon as Josh walked through the door, he took the baby from me and I could tell he didn’t want to give her back for her feedings. It was a quiet and peaceful night at home with my delicious family followed by a great night for Willow.

Sweet slumber this morning…

A friend (and much-admired yoga instructor) of mine offered some invaluable nursing advice that meant tons more sleep for both my girl and me last night. I woke up feeling refreshed, straightened my hair, packed healthy snacks for Josh, and even bathed the baby myself. Today I got some work done, ordered our holiday / birth announcement cards, straightened up the apartment, and will take Willow upstairs to a friend’s for a play date in an hour or so. Life is good.

And as my little naps peacefully, I have a moment for a quick post. I figure if you’re getting married this winter you definitely have your dress already. But as the snow falls outside my window and I think of all things bridal, I was inspired by some furry white formal shoes this morning. Planning a wedding for this time next year? Some fashion faves from my chilly home base to yours…

winter

Like a fairy tale…

shoes

Something about these just makes them perfect. Maybe it’s just everything about them…

longtrain

It’s not a seasonally specific gown, but a train this long just calls for winter formality.

Coldy Cold.

Mmmkay, it is totally freezing outside and I was not at all prepared. The doctors keep telling me the best thing to do to get this baby out is to walk, but when it’s this cold, that’s not much of an option. Yesterday, post 40-week (!) checkup, I alternated between Target and the mall, walking laps at a clip in hopes of getting things moving. So far, no dice. I even whispered to my little gal as we flipped through the racks that she’ll be getting much cuter stuff once she’s out and I can see her skin tone to decide upon the best color schemes.

unnamed

Every time we go on a date these days, we think it’s going to be our final one pre-baby. Last night, we hobbled off in the cold for super-spicy Malaysian food. Yum! Didn’t induce labor, though…

But at a balmy 98.6 on the inside and with exterior temps capping out in the teens today, it’s clear why my little has decided to stay put for the time being. Until she makes her valiant entrance, I’m busying myself with lots of at-home yoga, endless gulps of water, daytime television, and online window shopping. Headed to a wedding this month? Shop these looks. And do NOT be afraid of black tights. They are always your friend.

20141118114019 20141118114046I literally could not be more in love with this cold weather-perfect, dazzling little dress by Free People. As with all of their fit-n-flares, you know it’s going to make you look like your cutest, skinniest little self. Intricate design details, especially in the sleeves, make it super-fancy despite the length. I would argue you could even wear this to a blacktie affair as long as your shoes were MAJ. $250, FreePeople.

hmprod

I hate to give the wrongful impression that black is the only acceptable hue to rock to a winter wedding, but it just so happens that some of the chicest affordable options are black. Is it me, or does this dress look like it costs a good 300 bucks? Laugh all the way to the bank while your buddies who skipped rent to buy a 3.1 Phillip Lim number drool over this $40 sheath from H&M. I could not be more obsessed with the sheer, rhinestone-encrusted sleeves. Available in sizes 2-14.

floral

So often, we associate floral prints with spring and summer, but the truth is, they can come in very handy in these frigid times, as well. A wintry mix adds whimsical charm to your ensemble, and as long as you select a dress that’s fitted and grownup as opposed to flirty and girly, you’re in the chips big-time for any winter wedding. ASOS‘s Wiggle Dress is a perfect option. $123.

A Pleasant Place for Plaid

It couldn’t be farther from the aesthetic we went with for our beach nuptials, but there is something seriously cool (or should I say warm?) about incorporating plaid in your fall or winter fete. Whether it’s an accessory you and your ‘maids sport during photos, the groom’s tie, or a table runner, this tried-and-true print can work its way into the fabric of your day with a touch of tradition and plenty of class. Here’s some inspiration:

The jingle bells and other ultra-Christmasy details might be too much, but I’m loving this scarf-inspired tablecloth for an outdoor table setting.

And on the flip side, here’s a polished-prep interpretation of the plaid-at-the-table thing. Love the monograms.

Fall for Maiden Braids

Braids are still experiencing quite a moment, and I couldn’t love them more. Whipping your hair into a couple of tiny plaits on either side and sweeping it back is an easy date-night fix, and French-braiding hair that hasn’t been washed in a day (or two!) lets you leave the house looking polished. But for your wedding, the right combination of artful braiding can become a true masterpiece of the tresses. As we head into fall and winter, take note of these seasonally-appropriate, simply gorgeous braided styles. Happy pinning, brides!

Loopy at the top and chunky down below, this style is bohemian without the too-summery feel of long, loose hair worn down. So chic for an autumn or winter wedding! Hair design for Marchesa Bridal.

Simpler than it looks, you might even have a bridesmaid who can recreate this side-French look with a messy roll-over at the back. I like how she has a few wisps free in the front. Perfect for a formal affair or a backyard bash!

f53fce833831e55adc941531ed37dfe5

The side fishtail with ethereal headpiece is just magical. I love this for the whimsical bride — the red lips and heavy lashes ground it and make it fall-appropriate.

Alright, alright … the mistletoe is cheesy. But these loose curls with a sweeping, inside-out French on the side are perfect. Neutral eye makeup and fun hairpiece round out the look.

Let’s go out on a limb here and assume you won’t be wearing an icicle-inspired crown for your wedding. But a multi-level fishtail braid totally works! Adore this braid.

Hot Toddy on a Cold Day

After an absolutely gorgeous weekend spent frolicking around DC, we’re back under eight inches of snow with a dog who barks out the window at the powder, whining for more play time. Little can he understand that the humans are sick of the stuff. Today, Josh and I will both head in a little later than normal to avoid the early-morning ice, but I wanted to share a little experiment with you, should you be fortunate to have an actual snow day.

Last time we had one, I worked furiously on my laptop all day while Josh juggled conference calls, spreadsheets, and dog duty. By five, we were thoroughly frozen, exhausted, and craving a warm treat. Out of coffee and the energy it would take to walk to our nearest Starbucks, I decided to try my hand at making us a hot toddy. A quick Internet search revealed that I did not have most of the traditional ingredients (like honey!), but I was determined to make it work.

I now present you with Jensy’s Kitchen Sink Hot Toddy, a combination of similar ingredients to the traditional recipe, that I gathered from what we had in the house. Next time I plan to play around more, adding different spices and swapping out the tea of choice for passionfruit or a welcome kick of caffeine. When making yours, these are the basic components you’ll need to get that tangy kick of flavor and a warm winter’s buzz:

– Alcohol
– Sweet & spice
– Sour/acidity
– Warmth

These were seriously good — I hope they keep you warm today!

ALCOHOL
Traditionally, whiskey or brandy are used. We had neither, and with my Celiac’s, rum is always a safe bet. Just avoid “clear” spirits as these will likely be too abrasive and don’t heat up as well.

hot1

This El Dorado 15 was a gift — Josh is usually its solo sipper. Use high quality alcohol for a smooth finish.

SWEET & SPICE
Most hot toddy recipes call for honey, but we were out and there was no grocery store run in our future with the roads in the state they were. You can use any sweetening agent, even Splenda. Just make sure to mix with a traditional kitchen spice (I used cinnamon; you might consider nutmeg) to keep your sweet in check. Crush gently in the bottom of the mug before moving on.

hot2

hot3

Raw sugar is a fixture in our house. Use a half to a full packet of Sugar in the Raw, and a half teaspoon of cinnamon.

SOUR/ACIDITY
Fresh-squeezed lemon juice balances out the flavor of this drink flawlessly. If you’re out of lemons, though, fear not. You’ll want to just reach for a tangier tea. Since I had these generous, juicy lemons to use, I opted for a spice-based tea. The combination was flawless.

hot5 hot4
WARMTH
And finally, the most important point. Heat things up! Have water heating up on the stove while you slice your lemon and squeeze the juice directly into your sugar and spice mix. Next comes your desired amount of booze — we opted for about 3/4 of a shot glass each. Place your teabag in, and once the water is boiling, simply pour on top. Remove teabag as per your desired potency, stir, and serve.

I mean, does it get any sexier than this?

You might be sugary sweet, but your lips can say a lot with just a light frosting. I love a warm pink lip, but the winter bride might consider cooling things down. If you are not into red, consider a sheer pink that errs on the side of silver. You’ll find this look turns into a new neutral — and will look great with your honeymoon tan, too!

Winter Wonders

This weekend was inspiring. The weather was gorgeous, the sun was shining, Josh and I wandered all over DC snapping pics and eating salads and gluten-free wraps without a care in the world. And then it changed. But even in this never-ending East Coast winter, we can find beauty. Sometimes it isn’t just the swish of a dress or glint of an envelope liner that does it for us — stunning wedding inspiration can come from a variety of sources:

Winter Skin Solutions for the Bride-to-Be

Oh. My. God. Is this weather seriously killing your bride buzz, or what? I’m considering myself lucky this season that I don’t have my own nuptials on the horizon, but I’ve developed a little winter skin routine that has me feeling cuter and less itchy as we trudge onward toward spring.

Should we begin with hue? If you run screaming in the opposite direction from every faux tanner that comes your way, I totally get it. But the absolute lack of sun my visage has seen in the past four months is truly making me sad, so this Long Islander has gone back to her roots and invested in a few at-home tanning solutions. Do not go to the tanning salon. It’s just a bad plan over all, and while, yes, I’ve been known to cave once or twice a year, there are so many safer and cheaper options.

jergensYep, that’s right. Good old Jergen’s Natural Glow daily moisturizer for the body actually works great on your face, too. Just make sure to exfoliate first to avoid caking. Use the pads of your fingers to apply in a circular motion, from the T-zone out towards your cheeks and upward to the hairline. And make sure to go along the jawline twice, to avoid any splotching in this highly visible area. Proceed to apply to arms, legs, and anywhere else that needs a tan boost. You’ll find a warm glow that grows with each application, rather than being instantly — and startlingly — brown. Magnifique! $9, soap.com.

kate

They might be a bit pricey, but Kate Somerville’s self tanning towelettes are a true beauty breakthrough. I recommend stocking up on these a month before your wedding and using them for your bachelorette party, bridal showers, the big day, and of course on the honeymoon. $48 for twelve, sephora.com.

Moving right along to texture, what’s your biggest woe? I find my winter skin is significantly dryer than in warmer months, with rough patches that make me look old and tired. But, wonder of wonders, I still suffer from once-monthly (y’all hear me?) acne breakouts that need to be treated promptly should I have any hope of venturing out in public. What’s a combo-skin girl to do? Invest in the right cleanser and moisturizer. Oh, and… it sounds crazy. But, stop washing your face so much!

3605975054996_Rosa_Arctica_Cream_May2011

Essentially, this is the best stuff ever. My baby bro got me hooked after watching a line across his forehead actually disappearing within three months of daily use. Um, what? Previously I’d thought that wrinkle disappearance was the stuff of legends! If you’re part-oily like me, opt for the lighter formula. Dry as a bone — go all-out with the original. Either way, this nourishing and delightful cream will really, truly resurrect your tired skin. Thank me later. No, really. Do. $60 for 1.7 oz, kiehls.com.

dr

But before you slather on that heaven in a pot, make sure your skin is clean. Now, I hinted at this above and you probably think I’m nuts, but dry and acne-prone girls alike, take note. If you dial down to only washing your face with cleanser once a day, I can pretty much promise you smoother skin. Especially in winter months, we need to hold onto as much of the good natural oils as we can. If you have bad cystic acne, you’ll probably still want to give your face a light wash twice daily, but do not exfoliate more than once in a day — ever! I wash my face in the morning with warm water ONLY and then in the evening, I remove my makeup and then wash with a gentle cleanser. When acne is present, I reach for Neutrogena acne scrub, otherwise it’s all about the above. Dr. Brandt Lineless Foaming Cleanser, $40, beauty.com.

200mlTube Invigorating Body Reviver

And what of the rest? So your face is scrubbed, pimples are clearing, and smoothness is returning. Pay your bod some attention with one of my personal favorite products. Bora Bora sand brings you right to the beach — smoothing rough skin even from your tiny, wintry apartment bathroom. Naturally foaming coconut and Moringa seed extracts will gently cleanse deep, putting your morning shower to good use for your skin. But aside from the softer feeling you’ll have from head to toe, the scent of this delightful scrub is my favorite part — a combination of lemongrass, lime, and thyme. Approx. $36, espaskincare.com
