Oscar Party, Our Way

It was a star-studded night at Casa Gerson, and the pup and kitty arrived in style. Josh and I were jammie-bound after a filling lunch and long walk around the city in overcast skies that threatened precipitation. The Oscars are a big deal in this house, and last night’s celebration did not disappoint. We stocked up on cheese and prosecco, I baked gluten-free chocolate chip brownies, and the stage was soon set for a night of entertainment and snuggles.

Before we get into the deets, a moment of silence for Lupita in her custom, ice-blue Prada. That dress was just perfect for the fairy tale she is currently living out. And the acceptance speech she gave had every dreamer watching silently squealing, Yes! … Thank you, Lupita, for being the picture of grace and style, and a true movie star, the likes of which we haven’t seen in years — maybe even decades.

Now, back to our little Oscar party for two.

Each of us has a little (okay, huge) competitive streak. But this year, rather than shouting out our votes in the moment and then showboating deliriously at each category-by-category “win,” we decided to be more streamlined about the process. We each cast our submissions in advance, secretly, and sealed them before the A-listers hit the carpet. We voted in nine categories including Best Picture, the Leads, and Cinematography, to name a few.

In true Gerson style, we knew we wanted to eat at our coffee table in front of the TV to get the best vantage point for the night’s fashion and festivities. But I fancied things up to add dimension and fun. We shoved aside a stack of fashion-focused coffee table books and employed a framed photo of us from the first-ever black tie event we attended as a couple (this seemed like a fun alternative to actually dressing up for our little party). I added a vintage crystal candlestick with a glittery candle and fashioned placemats out of torn magazine pages featuring two of our favorite A-listers. These are so simple to do and look awesome — especially if your table is marble. All you have to do is place them down and affix to the table with a tiny sliver of clear tape on two edges. They stay put throughout the evening and offer easy clean-up with a quick lift, crumple, and toss.

placemats

Easiest DIY table scaping ever. Totally doing this for our next dinner party.

I love to paint my nails in front of the TV, so I did just that as we watched our favorite celebs head down the carpet. Then, we noshed on wasabi-seasoned rice crackers and asiago cheese before toasting the night with prosecco. Using frozen gluten-free crusts, I made organic garlic and mozzerella pizzas on which we sprinkled some Parmesan and fresh pepper. For dessert — it was those GF chocolate chip brownies on which we’d been grazing much of the night. (Thank you, Trader Joes, for turning me into a “baker” — my husband is obsessed).

envelope front

As the winners were announced, we rejoiced at our victories and drowned our moments of defeat in bubbly. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that I won our little competition, albeit by a slim margin.

envelope back

For each category, we tore open our envelope right before the announcers did, revealing our predictions on these tags. For each round, I gave us different names. Jay and Bey, The Princess and The Frog, and so on. There are so many fun little surprises you can throw in with a game like this.

This little party would have been a total crowd-pleaser — from the gourmet gluten-free goodies to the crisp prosecco and candlelit glow — if we’d decided to invite guests. But sometimes, what you really need is a night in with your spouse, just the two of you — and half of Hollywood.

Cheap Dates for Cool Temps

If you’re planning a wedding, or you’ve recently gotten married, chances are that finances are somewhat tight right now. Despite generous parental support, we coughed up quite a bit of cash for the wedding, not to mention the constant travel back and forth between Dallas and New York. Post-move, I wasn’t working anywhere near a full-time schedule, so we missed out on a couple of months of a dual steady income. And then, bam. Christmas!

Needless to say, the Gersons are in a time of financial recovery. But we are not letting this damper our spirits or limit our time spent together. Josh insists on a weekly date night to reconnect and enjoy each others’ company. It’s usually a swank dinner with wine followed by much-needed couch cuddles. This past weekend, we did a quiet Friday night dinner at our favorite fish restaurant in Old Town, followed by a viewing marathon of Damages. Sunday afternoon, Josh booked us a couples massage, because this pair was totally worn out and stressed. We needed it.

But there are so many other ways you can treat yourself and your honey to some quality time this winter without spending a fortune. Here are some ideas:

Snow day photo shoot:
My most poignant memory with Josh (minus the wedding, and before that, the proposal) was a snow day two years ago. It was actually his birthday, and a blizzard had wiped out Manhattan. Taxis were buried in snow, tourists were completely confused, traffic was at a standstill. But Starbucks was open. And of course, so was Central Park.

We spent less than ten dollars that entire day, but we wandered all over the city and created some beautiful memories. Instead of using our smart phones, we brought Josh’s fancy camera and snapped away. Create a winter wonderland photo shoot with your man in the snow. Frolic and play like kids. It doesn’t cost a penny to enjoy a snow day — and the memories, and documentation, will last forever.

It might seem silly to do DIY’s for your spring wedding now, but you’ll be grateful later that it’s done. Check me out on Pinterest for a ton more ideas: http://www.pinterest.com/jensysparkles/

Craft corner:
If you’re a DIY bride, get busy. You might not think your guy is into it, but he could just surprise you. When I was making elaborate shadow boxes as thank-you gifts for my bridesmaids last winter (to present while we shopped for their dresses the day after Christmas), I assumed my then-fiance would watch football the entire time and ignore me. To the contrary, he got his tools out to repair a broken frame and even weighed in on my color and pattern selection for each girl.

Put your man’s creativity to good use this winter. If you’re still in the planning stage, select a DIY project on your list and get his input. You’ll likely find he’s more receptive to helping you if he is asked for some insight. Or, if you’re married, get busy decorating your love nest. There’s so much you can make at home instead of spending a ton of money. More ideas to come in the weeks ahead! But in the meantime, check out DIY Bride.com for weddings and Martha Stewart.com under “crafts” for home.

Cold weather picnic:
You’ll have to buy the food, natch, but a cozy picnic is a great, cheap way to spend an afternoon. Make grilled cheese or BLT sammies at home and wrap them in tin foil before packing them up to keep them warm without getting too humid. Pack a Thermos of soup or pasta with a homemade Bolognese sauce. I also recommend a delicious bottle of red wine — but don’t forget the corkscrew. On this note, I leave you a beautiful stylized picnic shoot from Style Me Pretty. As soon as Josh’s work lets up, this is the first thing on our weekend to-do list. Enjoy!

Showered in Love, Part One

I would like to extend a thank-you of immeasurable size to my devoted mother and sister-in-law who, on Saturday, threw me the most exquisite bridal shower in the history of the world. Or at least the history of Long Island. I had an inkling that some sort of female-dominated celebration with cake and gifts was coming my way, but I never anticipated all of the incredible details with which the day would be infused. My top three were as follows:

Poufs.
Allie found these on Pinterest, I believe, and set about making them. She clearly had fun doing so, or at least recognized that I would want a lot of them, because they were everywhere. And they were beautiful. You can find a how-to on similar poufs here. Mine were white and pink, and arranged artfully not only in the party areas but surprisingly upstairs in my childhood bedroom, too. I highly recommended making these for any shower, kids’ party or rehearsal dinner on your horizon. They’re a total conversation-starter and everyone loves them!

-2Lilacs.
On Saturday morning, I was ushered down the back stairs of our home with my eyes closed and directly out onto the porch, because our florist was in the kitchen whipping up secret arrangements that I was not to see until the party. When I descended the main stairwell in the front to enter my party hours later, lilacs were everywhere. I thought it was really cool that Mom and Pookie swayed from the obvious choice of pink for the flowers, instead bringing a lovely pop of lavender into the party. I adore the color purple, and sometimes it does not get enough attention in my life.

Love.
Second-cousins and childhood friends, the wife of our best man and five cheerful bridesmaids… family, friends, and family friends… everyone was there. My baby brother served as event photographer and my dad showed up at the end with a massive container of his famous charred chicken to fill any bellies that were not yet stuffed with olives, cheese, salad, salmon, risotto, and cake. My older brother phoned in from his workday in Connecticut to tell me that he was sure my shower was beautiful, but the best part is building a life with the one you love. These words were so meaningful and appreciated.

there were many ways i was shown intense love on saturday, from hugs to gifts and champagne to laughter. but the food that was lovingly prepared by the two leading ladies in my life was the most labor-intensive work of love at the party. (everything from that lemon risotto to each sauce for the salmon was made from scratch)

The theme of the party was “Our Giulietta found our Romeo” and have I ever! I’m lucky to have him, and he is lucky to have me, and we are truly luckiest to have such a wonderful group of people around us who care for us and make us feel their adoration on special days and not as special days. On Saturday I was showered with love in the most generous and beautiful ways.

And on Sunday, we woke up for our third attempt at an engagement shoot… and found ourselves showered with RAIN.

More on that soon. And I will be posting more photos of the shower as soon as my mom forks over the memory card!
